Bengaluru to get 500 Pink AutoRickshaws Reserved for Women early by April

Tit-Bit: Distributed under the schemes of Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), 500 pink autorickshaws are all set to hit the Bengaluru roads by April. In order to ensure women safety and a convenient transit in the city, these autos will be equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS trackers.

Talking to Times of India, Abdul Rakeeb Zakir (chairperson of the BBMP standing committee for social justice and welfare) said,

“We plan to distribute 500 pink autos under our welfare schemes. We will provide Rs 80,000 in subsidy for each auto rickshaw, and the beneficiary will have to pay the balance. The drivers can be men or women, but if the latter come forward, they will be given preference. We will provide a special training programme for male drivers to behave with woman passengers better.”

Things to Know:

– Rs.24,000 will be spent on the tracker and CCTV cameras which will come at an additional cost to the cost of the vehicle.

– Palike is planning to increase the number of Autos based on the response. In this context, Mayor Sampath Raj said that they have written to the transport department for the permits.

– This will help Women left stranded at Metro stations or Bus Stops looking for auto rickshaws late at nights. Also, the implementation of CCTV cameras and trackers will ensure their safety.

– There will be no major change in the design of Autos but will be painted Pink to help distinguish.
