A cafe in Gujarat provides free snacks for those who bring plastic waste. These snacks are being prepared by women under the Gujarat government’s ‘Sakhi Mandal’ scheme, the sources said.
‘Swachh Bharat’ Scheme
The ‘plastic cafe’ has been introduced in front of the Dahod tehsil panchayat as part of the Centre’s ‘Swachh Bharat’ Scheme. It is a first cafe in the state that provides free snacks and tea in exchange for plastic waste, said NP Patanwadiya, Deputy District Development Officer.
The cafe has collected a considerable amount of plastic waste since it began. These plastics are then sent for recycling and the plan is to expand the initiative to other areas in the district if it is successful.
Free snacksĀ
The snacks prepared for exchange with plastic wastes are being prepared by women under the Gujarat government’s ‘Sakhi Mandal’ scheme.
“It was set up two days ago to make the tribal-dominated Dahod district plastic-free. As per the scheme, those who bring in one kilogram of plastic waste will get snacks while those bringing in half that quantity will get tea,” the official said.
