On 25th March PM Modi announced a 21-day lockdown for the whole of India and people were immediately thrown into a complete frenzy about what to do, now that they’ll spend their entire 21 days at home.
Doordarshan did the whole country a huge favor and brought back Ramayana which was a family favorite back in the late 80s. The show was called Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana which was a 1987 television series that dramatized the great Hindu epic and was one of the most popular shows in the country at the time. BR Chopra’s Mahabharat was also a TV show which ran from 1988 and was considered one of the cult shows in Indian TV history. Ramayana made a comeback today as it was re-telecasted at 9 AM on DD National.
The first episode caused huge reactions in Indian households and media as everyone tried to watch the show online as well and DD Ramayana became Google’s top search and started trending on Twitter as well.
The search online also led them to DD’s online live channel where they could watch it online but the website crashed due to high traffic; such was the enthusiasm of our Indian audience.
These TV shows bring back a lot of nostalgia to give a sense of security to the people of this country who are in a lockdown of 21 days due to the spread of coronavirus 2019. These shows remind us how simple times used to be and how we can still make the best of our little lockdown by staying home, spending time with family and revisiting old classics.
One episode of the Hindu epic Ramayan will air in the morning between 9 am to 10 am while Mahabharat will be aired at 12 noon.
