From the past couple of weeks Bollywood has been on attention amongst social media, films like Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Chhapaak are creating quite a buzz on the internet as they are going head to head in between a chaotic environment in the country. Let’s see how this has affected Bollywood’s top-notch.

Which film is doing what?

Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak and Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior went head-to-head at the box office on Friday and their opening day collections have been decent. As per a report, Chhapaak has collected Rs 4.75 crore on day one and Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji has earned 16 crores on its opening day.

Both films are based on real subjects but the films were released during a disturbed environment in the country. Speaking on Chhapaak, there have been divisive trends on social media after Deepika visited JNU to show solidarity with protesting students. Hashtags like #BoycottChhapaak trended as did #IstandWithDeepika.

Because of this mess, Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji is expected to take over the bigger chunk of the business as people are more interested in his film rather than Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak.

State-wise, Tanhaji performed very well in Maharashtra while it was decent in North and East India.

Has the boycott practice affected Chhapaak?

However, Deepika’s film did not have a bad start either. The film was able to collect Rs 4.75 crore on day one which is a steady start. Even though the twitter trends made an impact at the ground level, a lot of people watched Chhapaak because they agree with what Deepika did during JNU protest.

Though there are people who may not watch just because they don’t agree with what Deepika did but there is nothing much to be worried about. Still, if the boycott practice affects the film then it will not just hit Deepika but also the financers, distributors, the exhibitors, the vendors, and many others.

Coming to Southern India, Rajinikanth’s Darbar is much likely to dominate both the films in the south. The film is released on 7000 screens and in between the trio, it seems Darbar is doing the biggest business in pan India. Tamil Nadu alone is expected to collect more than Chhapaak or Tanhaji. Kerala and parts of Karnataka will also be taken over by Darbar.
