Mysuru became the third cleanest city in India and the cleanest in Karnataka followed by Mangaluru. The Swachh Survekshan 2019 survey placed 165 cities in India according to their performance as the cleanest city. Indore from Madhya Pradesh topped the list and was followed by Ambikapur from Chhatisgarh.
Incidentally, Mysuru topped the Swach Survekshan list in 2014 and 2015 for two consecutive years. Surprisingly, no other city apart from Mysuru has managed to secure a place in the top 100 out of the 26 cities from Karnataka included in the survey.
The Success Is That Of Citizens
According to the Deputy Director, Directorate of Field Publicity, Dr. TC Poornima, “This year’s achievement is entirely dedicated to the citizens of Mysuru, as it is only because of their participation that we have managed to score the third rank nationally,” Apart from securing the third spot in the cleanest list, the surveyors also gave Mysuru the tag of Open Defecation Free Plus as they did not find any person urinating or defecating in the open.
Out of the total 5000 points, Mysuru gained 4378.5 while Mangaluru gained 2518.5 points gaining the status of the second cleanest city in Karnataka. Even though Bengaluru did manage to improve its position from 216 to 194 from last year, still it could not gain a spot in the first 100.
N Manjunath Prasad, the BBMP Commissioner said that they will be analyzing the breakup in detail and accordingly prepare a roadmap for further improvement. A lot of new initiatives are already underway and will be implemented in 2019.
Indore Completes Its Hattrick
Indore continued to top for the third consecutive time as the cleanest Indian city. Another city from Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, was adjudged the cleanest capital of India. In state-wise comparison, Karnataka secured 14th spot whereas the neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala secured 6th, 8th, 12th, and 21st spot respectively.
The Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs released these survey results recently in an event presided by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. The Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri was also present at this event held in New Delhi. The surveyors carried out this Swachh Survekshan for a duration of 28 days and tested 6.54 locations through 4800 assessors across India.
