Veteran actor Javed Khan Amrohi passed away on Tuesday, February 14, at the age of 73. He was well known for his work in films such as Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Chak De India, Lagaan, and Andaz Apna Apna.
The veteran actor was suffering from a breathing ailment and was bedridden for the past year. He was undergoing treatment at Surya Nursing Home in suburban Mumbai, said filmmaker Ramesh Talwar.
“He passed away at the hospital around 1 pm as both his lungs failed,” he added.
Actor Akhilendra Mishra, who worked with Javed also shared the news of the actor’s death on his Facebook page. “Vinamra shraddhanjali Javed Khan saheb, behtareen abhineta, varishta rangkarmi IPTA ke sakriya sadasya (Humble tribute Javed Khan sir. Best actor, senior artist, active member of IPTA).”
Mishra also told PTI that Javed’s last rites will be performed at the Oshiwara Kabristan at 7.30 pm. Javed was in his 70s and is survived by a son and a daughter.
The veteran actor’s career
Javed Amrohi was an important part of the Hindi film industry. He began his career with theatre and after graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Amrohi appeared in smaller yet key roles in over 150 films and close to a dozen TV shows.
Javed is best known for playing the barber Karim in the late 1980s TV show Nukkad; Anand Akela, one of the admirers of Raveena Tandon’s character in Andaz Apna Apna; the cricket commentator in Lagaan, and a support staff of the Indian Women’s Hockey team in Chak De! India.

The actor’s other famous titles are the ’90s hit films such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Laadla, Ishq, and the 1988 TV series Mirza Ghalib. His last reported film credit was Sadak 2 (2020), in which he reprised his role of Pakya from the 1991 original Sadak.
