“I wanted to ‘murder’ Anushka Sharma’s career”: Karan Johar’s statement sparks row

An old video of Karan Johar telling that he campaigned against Anushka Sharma is being widely shared on social media. The video attracted Kangana Ranaut’s attention and she has gone all out to criticize the filmmaker.

Karan Johar’s statement

Actress Kangana Ranaut came up with a response to a video of Karan Johar saying that he wanted to ‘murder’ Anushka Sharma’s career. Kangana has been waging a full-fledged war against Karan, whom she openly portrayed as the ‘flag-bearer of nepotism’, and has often criticized his alleged gang mentality.

Earlier this week, an old video of Karan revealing that he campaigned against Anushka when she was starting out was recirculated on social media.

In the interaction, from the 18th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2016, Karan said, “I completely wanted to murder Anushka Sharma’s career because when Aditya Chopra showed me her picture, I was like ‘no no, you no need to sign Anushka Sharma. There was another lead actor whom I wanted Adi to sign.” Anushka, who was sitting next to him, laughed.

Kangana reacts

Reacting to this, Kangana posted the video on Instagram stories, and commented, “Iss chacha choudhary ko bas yahi ek kaam hai (this uncle only does things like this).”

Also, writer-editor Apurva Asrani commented on the video. “Said in jest, I’m sure, but still a worthy point in the raging insider-outsider debate,” Apurva wrote in a tweet, sharing the video.

Vivek Agnihotri, who rose to fame last year with the controversial film The Kashmir Files, wrote in a tweet, “Someone’s only hobby is to make or break careers. If Bollywood is in gutter, it’s because of some people’s dirty ‘backroom’ politics against talented outsiders.”

Meanwhile, Anushka Sharma made her acting debut with Yash Raj Films’ Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She went on to work with Karan Johar on the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Her last film was 2018’s Zero, also starring Shah Rukh, and she will return with a lead role in the upcoming sports drama Chakda ‘Xpress.
