The train landed on the tracks and has been journeying around the princely state since, 26th January 1982. The train is rightfully named as the Palace on Wheels due to its décor and amenities that equip the 14 luxury coaches of the train. The decorative style of the train has been inspired from the regal personal carriages used for hunting travels by the Maharajas of the era.

While sporting an old-school royal appearance, the train still has all the technological advancements and necessary facilities at their finest installed in for the convenience of the passengers. Experience #1: Be a part of history

The royal carriages are a part of history themselves. After the Indian independence in 1947, all the royal carriages used by kings and princes were deemed useless. It was no longer feasible for the royal carriages to be run on the tracks. The coaches were packed with valuable furnishings and would charge high upkeep costs. However, the government along with the Rajasthan tourism department did not want to lose the rich royal heritage of these carriages. To promote tourism and offer a glimpse of the bygone princely lifestyle to the common people, the Palace on Wheels train was launched in 1982 that preserved the private carriages of the erstwhile Maharajas, Nizams, and Viceroys of our colonial past.
