Chandrayann 2 lifts off

Chandrayann 2 lifts off from Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota at 2.43 pm on Monday. Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) launched its second mission to the moon after the launch was detained a week ago due to technical glitches. ISRO used its most powerful rocket GSLV MK III, a 640-tonne rocket that is carrying an orbiter that will circle the moon for about a year, a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyaan that will help explore the moon.

ISRO had previously aborted the mission before an hour on July 15 due to a technical snag in the rocket. The agency was quick enough to sort out the problem and had decided a relaunch time of 20 hours countdown this Sunday at 6.43 pm. The space shuttle consists of an orbiter that will circle the moon about a year, taking images and testing atmosphere; a lander named Vikram which is named after India’s space pioneer Vikram Sarabhai; and a rover named Pragyaan.
