Who is S Somnath, the new chief of ISRO?

ISRO or the Indian Space Research Organisation is the premiere space research organization of the country and a vital space organization of the world.

Yesterday we saw a new development when Dr. S Somnath was appointed as the new chief of ISRO. Let us know who he is and what we have in store for ISRO.


  • He completed his graduation from Kerala University in Mechanical Engineering and was the topper of the university.
  • He completed his post-graduation from the IISc in Bengaluru in Aerospace Engineering and won a gold medal.
  • He is currently serving as the chairman of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram.
  • He also served as team lead for PSLV programs of ISRO in the early phase of his career.
  • He is an expert in an array of disciplines including launch vehicle design and has specialized in launch vehicle systems engineering, structural design, structural dynamics, integration designs and procedures, mechanism design, and pyrotechnics.
  • He is also appointed as Secretary of Dept of Space and this combined tenure will be for three years.
  • He has been awarded the Space Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India, Performance Excellence Award-2014, and Team Excellence Award-2014 for GSLV Mk-III realization, from ISRO.
