Close circuit television (CCTV) cameras have emerged as key in cracking crime in general and murder cases in particular, a policen inspector posted at a North-West Delhi police said while explaining how simple technological equipment help the police. Corroboration came from the arrest of two persons involved in the broad-daylight shooting of a 21-year-old woman in Faridadad.
The murder took place on Sunday and the police on Tuesday said they have nabbed both the accused. Police could make the arrests establishing the identity of the accused because the murder was caught on CCTV camera. Video-footage helped the police locate the perpetrators.
Here we have compiled a list of cases in which murder was caught on camera. Each incident of killing captured in a video makes it blood-curling and sensational.
August 2020, Karnataka: Murder, Necrophilia
It was a crime of murder and necrophilia in Karnataka’s Hassan district. The victim was a homeless woman. The act was recorded by a CCTV camera near the Kannika Parameshwari Temple on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Road in Hassan.
The CCTV footage showed a man wearing a white shirt and blue jeans with a big cement block in his hands. He hits the victim with the cement block and flees. He returns 40 minutes later to see that the woman is alive and bleeding. He tries to lift the woman up but she pushes him away.
He leaves to return around 15 minutes later. He hits the woman with the same cement block and runs away. The attacker returns once again to check if she is dead. Finding her dead, he defiles her body. The entire act was caught on camera.
July 2020, Uttar Pradesh: Murder for reporting harassment
Journalist Vikram Joshi was shot dead for reporting harassment of his niece to police in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. He was shot in the head by the men he had accused of harassing his niece.
He was shot while he was going home on his scooter with his two daughters. The attack was caught on a CCTV camera that showed the culprits stopping his motorbike, beating him up and firing bullets at him. He died two days later. It was a “revenge attack”. The family of the victim said the police had failed to investigate the complaint lodged by Joshi allowing the accused to take revenge.
July 2020, Delhi: Man Stabbed 28 Times to Death
It was a shocking video of a 25-year-old man was savagely stabbed 28 times to death by a three accused. The incident took place on a busy road of Rahubir Nagar area of Delhi. The accused attacked the victim for objecting to perform bike stunts.
The CCTV footage showed the victim being thrashed by the attackers as the vehicles passed by. One of the attackers could be seen stabbing the victim, identified as Manish Jhuggi. He was declared dead on arrival in hospital. Police arrested the three accused later.

April 2020: Uttar Pradesh: Disabled Man Shoots Woman
A man, physically challenged, killed a 65-year-old woman for not selling her house to him in Uttar Pradesh’s Kashganj district. The murder was captured on a camera. The video, that went viral on social media, showed the accused shooting the victim outside her house in Hodalpur village of the district.
The accused, a neighbour, was infuriated at the woman for selling the house to another neighbour. Video showed the accused crawling up to the woman and firing at her with his weapon. The woman was taken to a hospital but she died.
Accused, identified as Monu, was nabbed from his friend’s house where he was hiding. Police said they would take against persons who uploaded the video on social media platforms.
February 2020, Bengaluru: Beaten and Stabbed to Death
On February 14, a 27-year-old man, identified as Amjad Khan, was stabbed to death by a group of men. Police said the crime took place due to dispute over money.
In the video recorded by a CCTV camera showed the victim being attacked by the assaulters with knife. He was stabbed multiple times and died as he was being taken to hospital. Police arrested nine persons in this connection.
