According to Mercer’s ‘2020 Cost of Living Survey’, Karnataka capital Bengaluru has been ranked the 4th most pricey city for expatriates (a person who lives outside their native country) in India. Globally, the Silicon City stands at the 171st position.
Indian cities have jumped in the rankings
The survey results have shown that many of the Indian cities have jumped in the rankings. Last year, Bengaluru stood at No. 179 but this year, the city has moved up 8 spots. The survey said: “Bengaluru has risen eight spots in position, displaying slight strain on costs in food and utilities.”
The other cities that were surveyed
In India, Mumbai has been ranked the most expensive city for expats while it stood at the 60th spot in the global rankings. While New Delhi and Chennai stand at No.2 and No.3 in India, the cities have been globally ranked 110th and 143rd respectively. In India, Kolkata has been ranked as the least expensive city. The ‘City of Joy’ stands at No.185 globally.
Ilya Bonic, Career President and Head of Mercer Strategy said: “The Covid-19 pandemic reminds us that sending and keeping employees on international assignments is a huge responsibility. Rather than bet on a dramatic resurgence of mobility, organizations should prepare for the redeployment of their mobile workforces.“
Globally, Hong Kong is the most expensive city followed by Ashgabat (capital of Turkmenistan), Tokyo, Zurich, and Singapore. On the other hand, the least expensive cities for expats are Tunis and Windhoek.
