Mamata Banerjee bans The Kerala Story

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a ban on Sudipto Sen’s film The Kerala Story. Since the release of the trailer, the film has sparked debate. The trailer received widespread criticism for claiming that 32,000 girls from Kerala went missing and later joined the terrorist group ISIS.

According to News agency ANI Mamata Banerjee said, “West Bengal govt has decided to ban the movie The Kerala Story. This is to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, and to maintain peace in the state.”

She also said, “What is The Kashmir files? it is to humiliate one section. What is The Kerala story?… It is a distorted story.” Reacting to the decision, film producer Vipul Shah said, “If that is what she has done, we will take legal action. Whatever is possible under the provisions of law, we will fight.”

Strict action will be taken against any theatre found showing the film, a West Bengal government official told PTI.

‘The Kerala Story’ producer reacts

Now, Vipul Shah, producer of the controversial ‘The Kerala Story’ movie, said legal action isn’t ruled out if state governments ban the movie. His reaction comes after West Bengal and Tamil Nadu banned the screening of the movie.

“If that (ban of the movie) is what she (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) has done, we will take legal action. Whatever is possible under the provisions of law, we will fight,” said Shah in Mumbai.

“Their (Opposition) face is getting exposed, they’re doing appeasement and vote bank politics. By banning the film (The Kerala Story), West Bengal is committing injustice. Recently only, a girl was raped and murdered in Bengal… what are you ( Mamata Banerjee) getting by standing up for such terrorists,” said Union I&B Minister Anurag Thakur.
