Reliance Jio is going to charge extra amount for outgoing calls made to rival networks like BSNL, Airtel, MTNL, Vodafone and Idea. Taking a U-turn for providing free calls in its service, Jio is going to charge 6 paise per minute as IUC charges on outgoing calls for other network providers.
Jio to charge on outgoing calls
Jio has temporarily announced that it will charge customers for imposing the ICU (Interconnect Usage Charge) charge on outgoing calls to other networks like Airtel and BSNL. According to the new plan, a Jio user has to pay 6 paise per minute till the time he is calling the other person with another network. Making a voice call to rival operators will have to buy additional top-up vouchers of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100, for additional IUC minutes.
Here are the new plans fro Jio
IUC Top-Up Voucher Amount (Rs) | IUC Minutes (non-Jio mobiles) | Free Data Entitlement (GB) |
10 | 124 | 1 |
20 | 249 | 2 |
50 | 656 | 5 |
100 | 1,362 | 10 |
What is IUC?
IUC is a certain cost a telecom operator has to pay to the other telecom operator if a customer makes an outgoing call to their customers. The TRAI determines the IUC charge and currently, all operators have to pay 6 paise per minute. Therefore, the customers will have to pay IUC charges until the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) brings the fee down to zero, which is much likely to happen on January 1, 2020.
If Jio offers free calls on its network then it will have to bear losses as it pays the IUC charge for every call made to a different network. As for now, Jio wants the TRAI to go for zero IUC charge and that seems to be arriving by early 2020.
