Red Alert Has Been Issued For These 4 Cities In Karnataka, Extremely Heavy Rain Is Expected In Next Few Days

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rain, ranging above 204.5 mm for these 4 cities in Karnataka.

According to the reports, educational institutions in several parts of Karnataka will remain shut. Top officials in the 4 districts of Karnataka – Udupi, Kodagu, Hassan, and Uttara Kannada – have declared a holiday for Anganwadi schools and colleges amid the ‘red alert’ issued by the weather department.

IMD has indicated extremely heavy rain, ranging above 204.5 mm. Heavy to very heavy rain” ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm has also been predicted for the next two days. Strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph and occasional gusts are also expected in the state.

Meanwhile, the IMD also said that High waves in the range of 3.5 meters to 4.8 meters are predicted along the coast from Mangaluru to Karwar. The wind speed is likely to reach 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph on the coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has instructed officials to run a survey of the flood-prone areas to evaluate whether the residents in the impacted areas require to be relocated temporarily or permanently, his Office said in a statement.

“In 2009 after massive flood havoc 60 villages were permanently relocated. But people returned to their earlier residences once the flood waters decreased. We are considering the option of building well-equipped rehabilitation centers in higher places along the river banks and low-lying areas so that people could be shifted there whenever they are affected by floods,” the CM said.

Heavy Rains disrupted normal life

For the past few days, heavy rain has disrupted normal life in coastal areas and the Malnad region of Karnataka also. The rains have caused damage to houses, buildings, electric poles, and properties, also rivers have surged due to the downpour, attacking agricultural fields and low-lying areas.

“I have held discussions with Deputy Commissioners of rain-affected districts. Already rescue works are on and I have been directed to take up relief work. Because of heavy and continuous rains, houses and properties have got damaged in coastal districts and Kodagu, and the rains have continued,” Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

Apart from Karnataka, IMD has also predicted heavy rains in parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala-Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana during the next 5 days. Also, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will also see heavy rainfall in the next 2 days. Parts of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are expected to see average and scattered rainfall in the coming days as per the IMD forecast.
