Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Accused Of ‘Moral Policing’ Over Tweet About Women Buying Alcohol

Popular Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been accused of moral policing after he tweeted a picture of women standing in line to buy alcohol. He invited the accusations for the caption he wrote to the picture, which was definitely in bad taste.

Liquor shops reopen across the country

After a 40-day period when no alcohol stores were open across the country, on May 4th, as per the Government’s notification, liquor shops pulled their shutters up in India.

With many citizens not having access to their favorite drink during the lockdown period, yesterday, the stores opened with huge crowds. Lines to the tune of kilometers were witnessed, while in some cases, even the basic norms of social distancing were given a miss.

RGV’s tweet invites strong reactions

On Monday, Ram Gopal Varma, the infamous director who is always known for his unconventional opinions, took to twitter and wrote about the surge of demand for alcohol in the country. He tweeted:

The tweet angered many, who felt that the caption was not in the right taste, especially when the country was inching towards achieving a better system of gender quality. Singer Sona Mohapatra said: “Dear Mr. RGV, time for u to get into the line of people who desperately need a real education.1 that lets u understand why this tweet of yours reeks of sexism & misplaced morality. Women have a right to buy & consume alcohol just like men. No one has the right to be drunk & violent.” RGV later replied to the reaction with another tweet. He said:
