10 people have been arrested in connection to the Howrah Stone-Pelting incident in the Tikiapara area today. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident and said that police would take further action soon.
The Stone-Pelting Incident
In a shocking video that is viral on social media, it is seen that a few locals of the Tikiapara area were chasing security personnel and hurling stones and bricks at the police as they were patrolling the area. It is said that the incident began when one of the policemen questioned a woman of the area as to why she was not following the lockdown norms. She later got into an argument with the personnel, following which the locals were instigated to carry out the attack.
WB CM Mamata Responds
Mamata Banerjee said that the police would be taking further action regarding the incident. She said: “Tikiapara incident should not have happened. It is sad, and I have asked the police to take stern action.” On further questioning, she added: “We do not differentiate based on caste and creed. In many places in UP, Delhi lots of things have happened. If one wants I can open Pandora’s box…but this is not the time for it.“
The Police Department responds too
While 10 were arrested in connection to the case, the Police Department also said: “The perpetrators will be identified & brought to justice. No transgression of the law anywhere will be tolerated.“
Meanwhile, BJP Unit in the state criticized Mamata Banerjee of allowing this incident to happen. They said: “West Bengal Police personnel attacked by a stone-pelting mob for trying to enforce lockdown in Tikiapara, Howrah. Thanks to Mamata Banerjee appeasement politics, her loyal voters are now attacking policemen, even while Bengal faces a tough fight against COVID-19 pandemic.”
