A noted Tamil writer and former Congress leader Nellai Kannan was arrested on Wednesday for making infuriating speeches against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.
Infuriating speech
The arrest came in after some BJP members raised a protest and gave the Tamil Nadu police a demand to arrest Kannan by Thursday evening. The protest asked action over Kannan for his provocative speech against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Kannan joined in an event against the Citizenship Amendment Act organized by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. He landed in trouble after a video of his speech went viral on social media and after which the BJP stuck a police complaint asking his arrest.
Into custody
Addressing the event, the 74-year-old had stated that he was very confused about the fact that why the Muslims have not yet killed the Prime Minister and Home Minister.
“Amit Shah is the mastermind behind PM Modi and the two of them should have been destroyed. But that hasn’t happened yet. But none of you are finishing it. Let that be to one side. I keep thinking, you all will do something,” he said.

He was taken into custody from Perambalur after an FIR was lodged against him for the unacceptable speech during the CAA protest. However, on Tuesday, Nellai Kannan was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of health issues.
BJP has insisted that Nellai Kannan’s statement was designed to stimulate violence against the prime minister and home minister and was a threat to the life of PM and Home Minister.
