Heavy rains and floods have affected 11 districts in Karnataka killing 7 people on a single day in incidences related to rain. There has been no respite from the heavy rains as well as from the release of water from Maharashtra making the situation beyond control in the state.

IMD Forecast Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall
IMD forecast says that the situation in the coastal and Malnad districts in Karnataka may worsen in the coming 3 to 4 days with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted. The situation could also disrupt the rescue operations in these areas. Already the road and rail connectivity in coastal parts and north Karanataka was disrupted due to shutting down of 26 national and state highways.
Landslides between Srivagilu and Subramanya Road stations have led to the cancelation of four trains. Schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Kodagu and Belagavi districts have extended holidays. Last year, Kodagu was badly affected by landslides. This year too the district has reported landslide incidences in Madikeri and Suntikoppa.
River Nethravathi has already crossed the danger mark leading to floods in low-lying areas in Mangaluru.
Heavy Downpour Caused Due To Deep Depression
The heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka has been caused due to a deep depression that crossed the Odisha coast creating a flood-like situation. The floodgates in the dams in Maharashtra and reservoirs and barrages in Karnataka has been opened.
More than 200 personnel from the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency services are performing the rescue operations with boats in Bagalkot, Belagavi, Yadgir, and Raichur districts.
The State Disaster Response Force is also supporting the team in these operations. A statement from the Chief Minister BS Yediyurapp’s office stated that the deadline for students to pay fees of schools have been extended.
The statement says, “Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has directed officials to extend the last date to pay the fee by one week for candidates selected in third round counseling of CET. Today was the last day to pay fees. This step is taken in the wake of the flood situation in various parts of Karnataka.”
