Sushma Swaraj Is No More: India Mourns For Her Untimely Demise

The former foreign minister and the Iron Lady of India passes away at the age of 67. Sushma Swaraj was brought to AIIMS Hospital at 9:30 on Tuesday and by the time she was taken to the emergency ward, the doctor had declared her death due to cardiac arrest.

This is the time when the whole of India is shocked and disheartened. She was a lady who served the people throughout her life for a social cause. She once said, “Even if you are stuck on Mars, Indian Embassy there will help you.” These great words speak about her dedication and commitment to her duty. Indeed, India has lost an extraordinary leader today.

In her last Tweet, she congratulated the Prime Minister, hailing him for scrapping Article 370 in the constitution. She also said that this was the day she was waiting to see. In a tweet, she wrote, “Narendra Modi Ji – Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.”

“An excellent administrator, Sushma Ji set high standards in every Ministry she handled. She played a key role in bettering India’s ties with various nations. As a minister we also saw her compassionate side, helping fellow Indians who were in distress in any part of the world,” PM Modi said.

“Extremely shocked to hear of the passing of Smt Sushma Swaraj. The country has lost a much-loved leader who epitomized dignity, courage & integrity in public life. Ever willing to help others, she will always be remembered for her service to the people of India,” President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was deeply shocked and anguished by the sudden demise of an extremely valued colleague. He Tweeted, “Deeply shocked and anguished by the sudden demise of an extremely valued colleague Smt. Sushma Swaraj. She was a seasoned Parliamentarian and widely respected cutting across the party lines. Her demise is a monumental loss for us.”

Home minister Amit Shah called her demise a disheartening loss to BJP and Indian politics and condoled her death on behalf of the BJP party.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “Deeply shocked to learn of the passing away of Smt Sushma Swaraj. Difficult to accept this news. The whole nation grieves, the Foreign Ministry even more so.”
