For a long time, it was assumed that white lions are indigenous in South Africa only. The first white lion was spotted in this region in 1938, but it was not until the 1970s that these animals were brought to public attention. Currently, there are about 500 lions mostly in captivity. However, now it seems, Bengaluru may also soon have its own pair of white lions roaring in their backyard, as Bannerghatta Biological Park(BBP) has almost completed the process to get a pair from South Africa.
White Lions in Namma Bengaluru
Lions typically have hazel or golden-brown coloring for their fur. However, in the case of white lions, the coat is entirely white or a very pale version of the usual hazel fur. The color of the fur can range anywhere from a blonde to near-white. The color of the white lion is said to be rare as its genetics is different as of a normal lion species, most of the South African lion. The white lion population around the world is only about 500.
BBP executive director Sanjay Bijoor told in a report, that they are through with the last step (financial) for transporting of the lions. “ We hope to see them in our zoo in a month,” he added.
African elands
BBP is also in the process of getting five African elands, which resembles the Indian Nilgai aka Blue Bull. However, zoo visitors will have to wait longer to get a glimpse of this incredible and second largest antelope in the world.
“Eland transportation is on hold after we got to know that foot and mouth disease is currently prevalent at the spot from where we have to get them. Even if we bring them here, quarantining will be an issue. We will transfer the elands only after we are assured the animals are safe,” said a senior official with BBP.
