The cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambir never seem to end criticism for India’s captain Virat Kohli. On a fresh note, the former Indian opener has criticized Kohli for his captaincy. He says Virat Kohli looks good as captain only because of two crucial players in the team.
Gambhir takes a jibe on Kohli
Gautam Gambhir who is a Bharatiya Janatha Party MP and a former cricketer takes a dig on Indian skipper by saying he was an inferior captain. He said that Virat Kohli still needs to learn a lot of things as a leader. The reason behind his effective captaincy is actually because of the presence of players like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni in the squad. He also said that Kohli’s captaincy is put to test when he leads the IPL franchise.
“Kohli was very good in the last World Cup but he has a long way to go as a captain. He does so well in international cricket as skipper because he has got players like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni in the side for a long time. Captaincy credentials are seen when you are leading a franchise when you do not have other players backing you,” Gambhir said.
“I have been clear whenever I have talked about this. See what Rohit Sharma has done for Mumbai Indians, see what Dhoni has achieved for Chennai Super Kings. If you analyze that with RCB, the results are there for everyone to understand”, Gambhir added.
‘Want Rohit to play in the Test format’
The former opener also stressed Rohit Sharma’s inclusion in the Test format, as he believes Hit Man is too good a player to be sitting on the bench.
“I think KL Rahul has been given a more extended run. It is time for Rohit Sharma to open the batting in Test cricket. If you pull him in the squad, he has to be a part of the playing XI. If he does not fit your playing XI, no point in picking him in the squad of 15 or 16. He is too good a player to be sitting on the bench,” Gambhir said.
It is not the first time the 37-year-old has criticized the worlds number 1 ODI batsman, in May this year he took a jibe on Royal Challengers Banglore franchise for giving Virat Kohli an opportunity time and again to captain the team, despite failing for several times. He had said that Kohli was not a shrewd captain. He had questioned Kohli’s captaincy for not managing to win an IPL trophy for his team.
