While the debates have surely upped since Rhea Chakraborty’s live interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, it needs to be noted that, whether true or not, some of Rhea’s points were actually relevant.
The #MeToo movement
A couple of years ago, India was at the center of a strong #MeToo movement that led to many shocking cases of harassment coming out in the open. The movement offered a platform for women to finally speak up without fearing the counter-actions of their tormentors. While the movement mostly did the good, on the hindside, there were a couple of drawbacks too.
Sushant was affected severely by the #MeToo allegations
In the interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, Rhea revealed that the #MeToo allegations had a massive impact on Sushant. The allegations were apparently in connection to Sushant’s Dil Bechara co-star Sanjana Sanghi.
During that time, the media took Sushant down by accusing him of the offense. All of this happened until 45 days, after which, Sanjana Sanghi came down from the US and declared that the allegations were false. Sanjana said that she took so much time to respond since she was unaware of the issue as she had been in the US.
However, Rhea argued that in the connected world, Sanjana’s justification is laughable and not acceptable. This point, if true, is something that needs to be considered.
How did Sushant spend those 45 days?
Sushant Singh Rajput was visibly frustrated and distraught with the accusations that were levied against him. Add to this the merciless attitude of the media, Sushant was overall left bruised by the proceedings.
On his end too, Sushant tried best to showcase his innocence in the matter. When Sanjana Sanghi was taking a lot of time to dismiss the reports, Sushant tried to contact her through one of the mutual friends. He did not contact her directly as he feared that the move could backfire.
Eventually, the actor had to force himself to release the snapshots of his conversations with Sanjana from his phone. Sushant focussed on the aspect that there was an agenda behind the entire proceedings, and, in the recent interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, Rhea revealed that Sushant believed that someone was behind Sanjana Sanghi. Amidst all this, Sushant also quit Twitter for a while as the constant abuses had broken him apart.
Time to introspect our actions?
While it is good that the #MeToo movement came into the picture, we must seriously wait for the accusations to get proved. Amongst 10 cases, if there is even one fake complaint, the movement can be termed as a ‘failure’ as the social repercussions of being accused as ‘sexual harasser’ is massive.
A topic, as such, is severely sensitive, and unfortunately, in the current era, very few consider this while plotting their personal vendetta. Especially when this lands at the lap of actually innocent people, the consequences can be extremely difficult to digest.
It cannot be concluded that those ’45 days’ were responsible for the drop Sushant’s mental health, but at least, in this busy world, it could be a line that we must be wary of in the future.
