Former Union Minister and current member of parliament from Lok Sabha, Shashi Tharoor has come out and criticized the Congress party for lack of elections for a party leader.
The Congress party has been finding a new leader to lead the party further after the previous president Rahul Gandhi resigned from the position after losing the Lok Sabha elections of 2019. Even after being persuaded by members to return as President, Rahul Gandhi continues to refuse. However, Sonia Gandhi resumed as the interim president until the election of a new party leader.
On Monday, it was announced that Sonia Gandhi will continue to be the interim president of the Congress party. In the back of this, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has called for an electoral process inside the party. He also called for a full-term president in order to counter a public perception of being rudderless and adrift. He said,
“Congress needs to expedite the process of finding the full-term president to arrest the perception of being rudderless and adrift.”
Tharoor Continues To Back Rahul Gandhi For President
Further, Tharoor backed Rahul Gandhi to become the President of the party as he feels that the leader has the mettle to lead the party. He said,
“We also need to arrest the growing public perception, fuelled by a dismissive media, that the Congress is adrift and rudderless, incapable of taking up the challenge of a credible national opposition.”
This comes even after severe criticism the Congress leader has faced for lacking any abilities to be in politics. He further asserted that,
“I certainly believe we should be clear about our leadership going forward. I welcomed Sonia Ji’s appointment as interim president last year, but I do believe it’s unfair to her to expect her to carry this burden indefinitely.”
