Recently, Congress leader Ashwani Kumar expressed an opinion on Congress leadership and had stated that Rahul Gandhi should continue his post as the Congress President. He added that dynastic politics of Gandhis has time tested and is the only to lead Congress.

Rahul Should Return

After a poor performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the grand old party’s the then-president Rahul Gandhi had stepped down from the role, taking full responsibilities of the loss. Since then the party leadership was taken back by Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi.

Since his resignation as Congress Chief, the Wayanad MP also refused to suggest a nominee for the post and choose to remain silent in front of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in meetings.

Congress leader Ashwani Kumar on his views stated that it is certain that when Rahul Gandhi resigned and a method was initiated to identify other leaders. However, none stepped ahead as an alternative. Under such circumstances, there are enough grounds for asserting that Rahul Gandhi should be given the responsibility to lead the Congress again.

The dynasty politics

The former Rajya Sabha MP also declared that as far as the Gandhis choose to remain active in the grand old party, the centrality of their role “is a given”. Kumar further rubbishes off the idea of the leadership of a political party following a ‘dynastic sequence’ stating that the Gandhi family had already proven they are deserving and are the only to lead Congress.

“The accusation of dynastic politics is wrong, reflecting that the leadership of the Gandhis has been time tested in the public arena in tough electoral battles. The Gandhis have been purified by fire so to say,” he said.

Ashwini further explained that the CWC need not decide elections to settle the leadership issue since there was a ‘unanimous view’ is that Rahul Gandhi should take over the Congress.

“I question very much whether, through an election by itself, we can restore the party’s organization given the present constitution of the electoral college. Elections are no guarantee of the party’s revival. They perform to be divisive and are known to leave the pain behind,” he added.
