In a surprising move, former Union Minister and a Member of Parliament, P Chidambaram supported Prime Minister Modi’s initiative ‘Janata Curfew’ and went on to predict that severe such measures would be expected by Prime Minister in the coming days.
On Thursday, addressing the entire nation, Prime Minister Modi put forth the idea of ‘Janata Curfew’ – a self-imposed curfew by the people for the safety of the people. He urged the people to hold the ‘Janata Curfew’ on 22nd March, Sunday, from 7 am to 9 pm when nobody should come out of their homes or attend any kind of gatherings. He also said the success of the ‘Janata Curfew’ would display the Indian symbol of self-restraint. Further, he requested the state government to observe the ‘Janata Curfew’ and also asked various social organizations to take up the initiatives to spread the news over the coming two days.
Opposition united with the Government
The opposition which is mostly divided in its views has now extended its support to the BJP led government and lauded its efforts to contain the outbreak so far. Addressing the media, Congress Party spokesperson Ajay Maken said that the Congress and its workers are with the government in fighting the battle against the COVID-19 virus.
Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram and a vocal critic of the Modi government, tweeted in appreciation of the Prime Minister’s address to the nation. While we extended his support to the ‘Janata Curfew’ initiative, he also called for ‘specific economic measures’ and suspending the parliament as a part of ‘social distancing.’
Even the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, one of the fiercest voices of the opposition, came out supporting the Prime Minister. Further, he also predicted that the Prime Minister will be compelled to come back soon with another address to the nation where he would be forced to take severe social and economic measures.
The ‘Janata Curfew’ initiative has been a success among the social media users and there has been genuine excitement to make it a success come Sunday.
