Oscars 2023: India Gets 3 Nominations; ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ gets a nod

India has scored 3 nominations at the 95th Academy Awards. RRR’s Naatu Naatu, and 2 more stands a chance to win an Oscar.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards have been announced and RRR has been nominated for an Oscar – Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu which also won the Golden Globe in the same category.

Naatu Naatu will contest against four other nominated songs – Applause from Tell It Like A Woman, Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once. A notable omission is Taylor Swift’s Carolina from Where The Crawdads Sing, which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Indian-made documentaries

With this, two Indian-made documentaries are also going to the Oscars – All That Breathes has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film, and The Elephant Whisperers for Best Documentary Short. India’s official Oscar entry, Chhello Show/ Last Picture Show, was left out of the final slate in the Best International Feature Film category.

RRR and the documentaries join a select group of Indian films to have gone to the Oscars – Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan were previously selected for Best International Feature Film.

The nominations for the Oscars were announced by actors Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams. The 95th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 12. Chat show host Jimmy Kimmel will host for the third time.
