The three blockbusters of Sandalwood

“Films like James, KGF: Chapter 2, 777 Charlie have crossed the 100-crore mark in the state. How will Sudeep differentiate between them or explain the secret behind their success?” questions the host.

“One Cinema had ’emotion’. One cinema had ‘Marketing’ and the last one had ‘Content’. I think they were all marketed well and whatever they have earned at the box office, I think, they deserved it,” Sudeep explains.

“Positioning (for the release) of these films was also good. These films marketed well when there were no other hot films around, especially from other states. So these are the things that we can learn from them and apply to our case.”

The marketing strategy

Further explaining the marketing strategy, Kichcha Sudeep gives an example by differentiating between KGF: Chapter 1 and KGF: Chapter 2.

“There is a huge difference between KGF 1 and 2 if we look at their marketing strategies. They never really marketed KGF 2, they marketed for KGF 1. They made it big and ultimately turned the audience’s attention to KGF 2. This was a beautiful strategy.”

“For Baahubali, ‘Why Kattapa Killed Baaubali?’ was itself a marketing strategy. So Baahubali 2 was never really promoted except for that one line that made the difference. Franchise films always do well in this case. The only risk is, that you have to be dependent on Part one’s success,” said Sudeep.
