COVID-19 pandemic: PM Narendra Modi, MPs to take 30% salary cut for a year

Earlier today, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the Cabinet has approved to reduce salaries of all the Members of Parliament (MPs), including that of the Ministers and Prime Ministers by 30% for this year.

The country in a state of panic

With the COVID-19 cases rising every day, the entire country is in a state of panic regarding the situation. Currently, the entire nation is serving a 21-day lockdown which is set to end on the 15th of April.

While funds to fight the epidemic are flowing from all quarters, the latest addition is the contribution of our elected representatives.

30% reduction in the salary of the MPs

While the MPs will divert 30% of their salaries to the consolidated fund of India, the nominated representatives – The President, Vice-President, and all the governors have also voluntarily agreed to reduce their salaries by 30% this year.

MPLAD’s will also be suspended for two years and the entire amount will be transferred to the consolidated fund of India, to fight the pandemic in the country.

Mr. Prakash Javadekar said that the amount accumulated from this will be Rs. 7900 Crores. He also added that the entirety of the amount will be utilized in the country’s fight against COVID-19.
