The first anniversary of one of the most controversial moves by the Indian state, the revocation of article 370, is fast approaching. The controversy around it refuses to settle down.
Along with the revocation of Article 370, the Indian state also bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. The chief of Congress of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Ahmed Mir slammed the revocation of the article as the worst ever decision and went onto demand statehood for Jammu and Kashmir restored. Speaking to the new Indian express said that the party would fight for the restoration of the statehood along with the constitutional guarantees. When asked about what constitutional guarantees he referred to,
“Jammu and Kashmir had got special status and that should be restored. We want it back. Jammu and Kashmir parties should be consulted and taken into confidence on what kind of constitutional guarantees should be provided to Jammu and Kashmir. But unfortunately, the government of India has not taken any call in this regard so far.”
One Year Anniversary
On the 5th of August of 2019, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and split into two – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Ghulam Ahmed Mir said,
“The Modi government had told the parliament that revocation of article 370 will lead to an increase in employment in Jammu and Kashmir. How much employment has increased? In fact, jobs have been snatched from many. Everybody knows what was the situation in 2019 and how it (militancy) is now. The reality is that trade has been badly hit since August 5, 2019, while all educational institutions are closed for the last 11 months. Even nursery classes have not opened.”
