Earlier this month Arvind Kejriwal’s Government made a big headline, where they were planning to give free metro and a free bus ride for the women in the national capital region. But unfortunately for Delhi CM, the central government on Thursday rejected this proposal.
Center Rejects AAP plea
Early in the month, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced free rides in metro and in buses for women who wish to avail of the facility. The scheme came months ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled to be held later this year.
E Sreedharan also called as Metro Man and DMRC principal advisor had earlier written to Manish Sisodia the Deputy CM of Delhi, telling him that he would not stand by the Delhi government’s scheme till the DMRC’s loan is cleared. He also called the Kejriwal government’s move a “political gimmick”.
Kejriwal free metro scheme
Kejriwal gave a statement earlier this month, he said that the safety of women is always a number one priority for the AAP government. Keeping this in mind, the government decided to make all Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses and the Metro to be free for women so that the maximum number of women can use public transport. Kejriwal further added that his government did not need the Center’s permission for this. They will bear the cost of this. The cost for the remaining six months will be ₹700-800 crore.”
According to the sources, the free metro scheme would have cost the AAP government approximately Rs 1,600 crore. Going against the plea, the Center on Thursday rejected the proposed scheme for free metro and bus travel for women in the city.
Union Government remains unclear about the scheme
Asked if the Union Government has any proposal regarding free rides for women in Delhi Metro trains, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in Lok Sabha said they did not have one. The question was asked by Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament on Thursday.
“Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in Lok Sabha denies that Union Government has any proposal for free rides for women in Delhi Metro, the question was asked by TMC MP Saugata Roy,” the news agency ANI reported. Sources
