Kishore (name changed), a young professional from the city, was caught violating traffic rules at least 15 times in the past six months. Most of them were related to riding without helmet and jumping traffic signals. Traffic cops reached his residence in Marathahalli on Tuesday, saying they will be consificating his motorbike.
Kishore, 24, was of the opinion that he had crossed signals when the lights were still orange and hence it should not be counted as signal jumping. He, however, admitted to helmetless riding.
After seizing his two-wheeler, traffic police took Kishore to Traffic Training and Road Safety Institute (TTRSI) at Thanisandra in north Bengaluru. There, he was made to attend a two-hour class on traffic rules and regulations. Instructors explained Kishore how his crossing the signal when lights were still orange counted as signal jumping. CCTV footage, based on which Kishore was fined, showed the light had turned red just before he crossed the signal.
Later, the youth was asked to face two hour exam, including theory and practical. In theory, traffic cops asked Kishore to explain signboards, show hand signs, while the practical included riding a stimulator, where his performance was assessed. While the minimum marks to be scored were 60 out of 100, Kishore got 75.
Joint commissioner of police (traffic) BR Ravikanthe Gowda said TTRSI’s prime motive is to increase riding and driving skills of motorists. “During the classes, we give them examples of road accidents caused due to rash and negligent driving. Training is also given in a dark room on identifying traffic signals and road medians with the help of reflectors,” he said.
For now, only two-wheeler riders are being trained under the initiative. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic-east) M Narayana said soon they will begin classes for four-wheeler drivers.
Time to follow traffic rules!
