“Ajay Devgn Films are Too Noisy”: Anupama Chopra feels Ajay Devgn is a Messy Director

Bholaa, helmed by Ajay Devgn, opened to decent reviews from critics, and word-of-mouth has been moderate. However, there are multiple reasons why the performance is simply not up to the mark. And that’s what Anupama Chopra has to say about Ajay Devgn’s performance as a director.

Bholaa BO performance

Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa has done average business at the box office so far. Expectations were too high considering the momentum of Drishyam 2’s mega-success with Ajay but still, the film has managed to earn an intermediate spot for itself till now.

Ajay Devgn and Tabu’s Bholaa, which was released on March 30, has now crossed the Rs 50 crore mark at the Indian box office collection.

Giving out a verdict on Bholaa, Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra feels Ajay Devgn is a confused director. She said, “Ajay is a very interesting director. With Runway 34, I really liked the first half, but the rest half was lost and confusing. With Bholaa, he has also tried too hard; his cameras appear to be restless and he is constantly trying to up the game in terms of craft and tech, but I feel like his film was so noisy that the story got lost.”

Ajay Devgn as director

Adding upon the same, Anmol Jamwal speaking alongside Anupama said, “I feel like this is a recurring problem with his directorial ventures. You can see the ideas and intentions (In Ajay Devgn’s films). But the screenplay always falters in engaging you throughout the film. I wanted to altogether avoid a comparative analysis with Bholaa to Kathi which is a beloved film. But the changes that were made in this film, especially for me, did not work well.

Anupama further feels that the villains in Bholaa never really scared her. “The action sequences were all good but for me, the stumbling block was that the villains were too Dull. I was never afraid of them. For this new sense of Mass Cinema, Bholaa missed the mark in creating that.”

Meanwhile, Bholaa is Ajay Devgn’s fourth directorial after You, Me Aur Hum, Shivay, and Mayday. The film is a remake of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Kaithi. Ajay once again reunited with Tabu in the film, who played a cop. The film also stars Deepak Dobriyal, Sanjay Mishra, Amala Paul, and Vineet Kumar, amongst others.
