Liger Is An Ultra Disaster At BO; It May Not Recover Its Budget, Says Trade Experts

Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger has made an average collection at the Box Office on its second day. Experts say that Puri Jagannath’s film might not even recover its budget.

Liger’s BO collection

Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger opened in cinemas on August 25, much to the delight of his fans. It, however, failed to live up to expectations, with most critics trolling the film left and right. The film somehow managed to earn Rs 26 crore on its opening day but it witnessed a huge dip in its box office collection on the second day. Most critics have ripped it apart and described it as ‘torture’.

“The current response to Liger is poor. We had earlier estimated that the film will open at Rs 30-35 crore in the South, but the response to the film in Telugu markets has been below par,” told film trade analyst Karan Taurani of Elara Capital to IANS.

Looking at the situation, the anticipated lifetime collections of the film, have taken a beating from the earlier projected numbers.

After a poor opening, it was necessary for Liger to take a decent jump at the box office on the second day, but the opposite has happened. In fact, more than the opposite as a trade source points to a massive drop of 50-60% in all South regions, especially its stronghold Telugu market, which brought the Liger box office collection day 2 to just Rs 15-16 crore.

Meanwhile, some experts also predict that Liger may not even recover its budget of Rs 125 crore. Trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan wrote, “Liger ULTRA DISASTER at the BO. Will NOT recover its budget. POOR talk & bookings.”

Life Time collection

Karan Taurani, further predicting the collection of the film, said, “The lifetime collections of the film were anticipated to be Rs 170-180 crore, out of which 25 percent was to come from the Hindi market, but looking at the current trends, the film is likely to earn a lifetime figure of Rs 55-60 crore,” adding, “Out of these Rs 60 crore, Rs 10 crore will come from the Hindi territory. Liger may report a below-par performance across markets.”

On being asked about the reason behind the film’s failure, Karan Taurani blames the storyline of the film.

“One has to really blame the kind of content that’s coming out these days,” said Taurani. “It is failing on every front to pull the crowd into theatres. Even for Liger, people have seen something similar in 2015 in the Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Brothers,” Taurani added, pointing out that the film gets beaten on the “novelty factor”.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has also called this film to be Outdated. In a Tweet, giving his review on Liger, the trade analyst wrote, Rating: 1 ½ #Liger fails to meet the expectations… An absolute waste of talent, resources, and opportunity… #VijayDeverakonda deserved a better launch in #Hindi movies… This #Liger just doesn’t roar! #LigerReview.”
