Even though there is a sigh of relief in our country due to the decrease in Covid patients, some other parts of the world are still suffering from the disease to a larger extent. The head of the World Health Organization’s regional Europe office warned on November 4, “Europe is back at the epicenter of the pandemic, where we were one year ago.” The pace of transmission in the 53-country region in Europe and Central Asia covered by WHO Europe is of “grave concern,” Hans Kluge told reporters from WHO Europe headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.
WHO chief Warns The World Once Again
“We are at another critical point of pandemic resurgence,” Kluge said. Kluge said hospitalization rates due to COVID-19 in the 53-country region more than doubled over the last week. If that trajectory continues, the region could see another 500,000 pandemic deaths by February, he said.
Relaxed prevention measures and low vaccination rates in some areas explain the latest surge, Kluge said. But he outlined that there were positive differences now, such as health authorities knowing more about the virus as well as having better tools to combat it. Kluge called for a switch to more preventative tactics to combat the virus, instead of “reacting to surges of COVID-19.”
Change The Tactics Says WHO
If the region continues on this trajectory, Kluge said one “reliable projection” predicts there could be another 500,000 Covid-related deaths in the region by February 2022 and that 43 countries in the region would face high to extreme stress on hospital beds at some point in the same period.
“We must change our tactics, from reacting to surges of Covid-19, to preventing them from happening in the first place,” Kluge added while addressing the media. There is a sudden surge in the patients worldwide and in no time this could reach India very soon, as said earlier if the third wave occurs in India that would be certainly “Deadly”.
