On a day Trinamool Congress MLA and estranged close confidante Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the party, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to turn TMC leaders to join the saffron brigade.

Addressing a rally in north West Bengal, Banerjee called the detractors in her party “opportunists” and blamed the BJP for attempting to break the ruling party in the state by using “moneybags”.

“Imagine the audacity of the BJP leaders, they are calling up my state president Subrata Bakshi and asking him to join the party. The BJP doesn’t have any political courtesy or ideology. And, there are one or two opportunists who only work for their benefit. The old-timers of the party are our real assets. The BJP is trying to coerce TMC leaders to join. It is using moneybags to break opposition parties… But, we will fight and defeat them in the assembly polls,” Banerjee, who is also the TMC chief, said on Wednesday.

Her statements came just moments after Adhikari tendered his resignation from the party as an MLA amid speculations that he might switch camps to the BJP later this month.

There are also various reports that claim resentment within the TMC ranks and senior ministers after several MLAs openly spoke against the party leadership and the state government recently.

“Sometimes they say the Citizenship Amendment Act will be done and National Register of Citizens won’t be done, sometimes they say NRC will be done and National Population Register won’t be done. But, I am saying today they will do all three. I didn’t allow NPR in my state and won’t do so,” the Trinamool Congress supremo said.
