Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday tweeted in support of the Bharat Bandh called farmer organisations against the contentious farm bills, saying that the new laws will enslave farmers.

Several farmer bodies have called for a national shutdown or ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Friday, September 25. The nationwide protest or Bharat Bandh has been called by the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), All India Kisan Mahasangh (AIKM) and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) against the farm bills.
Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers’ assurances, farmer bodies have expressed apprehension that the three bills will pave a way for dismantling the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving them at the “mercy” of big corporates.
In Punjab, where 31 farmer bodies have come together to support the call for Bharat Bandh, farmers have already started a three-day rail blockade against the farm bills. In view of the farmers’ protests and the Bharat Bandh, Northern Railway has cancelled some trains
The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill were passed by the Parliament earlier this week. The bills are yet to get the assent of the President.
Rahul Gandhi also tried to slam Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for concerns such as downfall of the Indian Economy, no data for Covid-19 deaths and recoveries and no facilities for Covid-19 patients.
The spread of the novel coronavirus in India has quickened in the last few days with new cases of Covid-19 and deaths reported every day. The epidemic has expanded its footprint in the country and has affected over 53 lakh people.
