The Congress Working Committee met on Monday to discuss the next leader who would take over as the Party President. However, there has been a major rift in the party meeting.
The former president of the party, Rahul Gandhi intervened at the meeting and questioned the timing of a letter signed by 20 top party leaders who were allegedly targeting the Gandhi leadership. The letter came after the interim President of the party, Sonia Gandhi, asked to be relieved from the post. Rahul Gandhi further accused the signatories of colluding with the BJP.
Congress senior leader Veerappa Moily has come out and said that he would never betray the party and said that the party has his loyalty until his last breath. He was one of the 23 leaders who wrote the letter to Sonia Gandhi. He also said that those who leaked the letter to the media must be punished by the party. He said,
“We have never questioned the leadership of Soniaji. Soniaji is like a mother to the party. We revere her even now. There is no question of any intention to hurt her feelings. If we have hurt her feelings, we are sorry for it.”
‘We Nurtured Congress’
Moily became emotional when he spoke about his loyalty to the party and said that he would remain in the congress until he dies.
After the NWC party, Sonia Gandhi agreed to continue as the interim president but also said that this arrangement cannot be for a long time. She is believed to have directed the party to elect a president soon. Responding to this Moily said,
“We can’t afford to lose the Congress party which we have nurtured by our perspiration, dedication, and sacrifice. We do recognize the sacrifice made by Soniaji, she was reluctant earlier but she gave life to Congress party. Nobody can be ungrateful to Soniaji. And we still treat her as our own mother and guide the destiny of the party and also the destiny of the nation.”
