Accusing the World Health Organisation of being China-centric in the saga of the novel coronavirus outbreak, the United States President on Tuesday said that the country would suspend its funding to the organization.
The World Health Organisation that has its headquarters at Geneva receives the majority of its funding from the United States of America. On Tuesday, addressing the reporters at the White House, Donald Trump said that the country would be putting a hold on the funding to the World Health Organisation. He said it is going to be a powerful hold. Trump accused the organization of calling every move to contain the pandemic wrong. Trump further said,
“We pay for a majority of the biggest portion of their money. They actually criticized and disagreed with my travel ban at the time I did it. They were wrong. They’ve been wrong about a lot of things. They had a lot of information early and they didn’t want to —they’re very — they seem to be very China-centric.”
The Trump administration is set to look into the United States funding to the World Health Organisation. The United States government spends close to $58 million towards the World Health Organisation. This is a smaller sum compared to other funds the organization receive at times, Trump said. The funding goes into the various programs of the organization.
Lawyers look to pass a resolution against WHO
Trump criticized the World Health Organisation of ‘missing the call.’ He accused them of being complacent and negligent in alarming the world about the virus. Meanwhile, Senator Jim Risch, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee called for an independent investigation into the World Health Organisation’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak. The Senator accused the organization of failing not only the American people but the whole world.
On the other hand, a group of lawyers announced intention to introduce a resolution to defund the World Health Organisation until Dr. Tedros, the director of the organization, resigns and demanded an international committee to investigate the role of the organization in covering up the Chinese Communist Party-led government’s failure of handling the COVID-19 outbreak.
