Indian National Congress Royalty Priyanka Gandhi has written to telecom companies urging them to avail free services for one month to migrant laborers who are away from their homes amid the lockdown in the entire country due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Since the lockdown was announced, the migrant laborers are out of work and hence no place to stay and no access to food by virtue of lack of money. In what is being called the great march, migrant laborers from metro cities have started walking towards their hometown.
Many from Delhi and Noida were seen walking with their families to Uttar Pradesh. After mounting pressure, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Delhi government have made arrangements to either provide them with shelter and food or make necessary travel plans.
Priyanka Gandhi Appeal to Telecom Companies
In the wake of this crisis, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has reportedly written to telecom companies to provide relief to the migrant workers in the form of free services for one month. According to her, this would enable them to contact their loved ones from their village and towns.
She has apparently written separately to Sunil Bharati Mittal, the chief of Airtel and the chief of Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani and also to the heads of BSNL and Vodafone. In the letter, she has highlighted the plight of the workers who are already devastated by the lockdown.
Priyanka Gandhi feels the telecom companies might make a change to the migrant workers’ life right now. At times like this, while they don’t have money to recharge, free services would help them to stay in touch with their dear ones who might be worried about them.
The congress leader feels that it is the national duty of each one of us to make sure they feel safe and don’t run out of essentials. In her letter, she also mentioned that a gesture like this would make them feel safe and then the government schemes would uplift their situation.
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the entire country has been in lockdown for a period of 21 days. The number of positive cases has crossed 1,100 with more deaths reporting every day. The number of recovered cases also crossed 100 giving some hope to the public in a state of panic.
