After 36 Years The Railway Board Finally Clears 148-Km Suburban Rail Project in Bengaluru

After waiting for 36 long years, citizens of Bengaluru will finally have a suburban railway within the city. The Extended Railway Board has given its nod for the 148 km suburban railway line project. The following project is good news for the citizens who spend an awful time in the city traffic.

Suburban Railways in Bengaluru

The long-pending Suburban railway project finally received clearance from the Extended Railway Board on Monday. The meeting that was conducted in the head office which included officials from NITI Aayog and Financial Ministry approved the 148 km project worth Rs 15,900 Crore. The proposed project is likely to be placed before the cabinet and the approval may be given within a month.

The following Suburban railway line will have 4 corridors that will have 57 railway stations spread across 148.17 km. It is expected to be completed by 2025. Out of the total railway line, 55.57 km will be elevated and the rest will be at a ground level.

The project envisaged the following four corridors

  • KSR Bengaluru City to Devanahalli (41.4 km route) eight elevated and seven ground-level stations.
  • Baiyappanahalli to Chikkabanavara (25 km route) six elevated and eight on ground stations.
  • Kengeri to Whitefield (12 km route) four elevated and five on ground stations.
  • Hillagere to Rajanakunte – (46.24 km route) will comprise of 19 stations.

Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, Kengeri, Cantonment, Whitefield, KR Puram, Baiyappanahalli, Jnanabharathi, and Nayandahalli will be the closest metro station near the suburban railway line.

The railway minister of state, Suresh Angadi declared this in a tweet on Monday. He tweeted, “In order to fast-track, the #BengaluruSuburbanRail, the Extended Railway Board met today and has given its clearance. In this regard, I assure the people of Bengaluru that Shri @PiyushGoyal Ji and I shall make all efforts to ensure that the project is brought to fruition at the earliest.”
