The man who leads the parliament for scrapping the controversial Article 370 in the constitution is up for something more interesting. Union Minister Amit Shah on Monday pitched the idea of a multipurpose identity card for citizens with all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, driving license and bank accounts.
He said, “Why can’t we have just one card for all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving license, voter card? There should be a system that all data should be put together in a single card. This is potential. That is why the digital census is very important.”
Addressing a gathering at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new headquarters of Office Office of Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, Shah said that digitally capturing data for Census and National Population Register (NPR) via the mobile app would help in merging individual database into a single multipurpose card.

Shah said the Census 2021 data will be the groundwork for the country’s future planning, development initiatives, and welfare schemes participation is key to the conclusion of the exercise. “If the census is properly undertaken and data managed in digital format, certain software can be developed to include all details in one card. Population census is not a boring exercise, it is an exercise that helps to provide people with the benefits of the government schemes. National Population Register (NPR) will help the government solve many issues in the country,” said the Home Minister.
Shah pointed out that, that no such calls were taken by the center as it was just an idea that needs to be worked on. He said based on the 2011 Census, the Modi government had thought 22 welfare schemes related to electricity connection to every home, gas connection, construction of roads, houses for the poor, toilets, bank accounts, the opening of a bank branch, etc.
