Shashi Tharoor Thumped With An Arrest Warrant Over “Hindu Pakistan” Remark Made Last Year

Congress leader and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor have been thumped with an arrest warrant. The Congress MP befell into trouble for a statement he had made the previous year regarding the formation of a “Hindu Pakistan”.

Tharoor’s remark

In July last year speaking at an event in Thiruvananthapuram, the English bonzer had said that if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it would create a situation leading to the formation of a “Hindu Pakistan”. Mr. Tharoor further declared that the BJP will write a new Constitution which will pave the way for a nation, much like Pakistan, where the rights of minorities are not considered.

Tharoor said, “If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha, our democratic constitution as we realize it will not survive as they will have all the components they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one.” Source

An arrest warrant from the court

The following year, a case was filed under Section 153A/295A of the Indian Penal Code and Section 2 of The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. A Lawyer named Sumeet Chowdhury drove the petition before Kolkata Magistrate Metropolitan Court against Tharoor’s remark that created disharmony and hateful act intended to offend religious feelings. He also mentioned that Tharoor also refused to withdraw his remark.

Last year, the Court had issued a call to him. Following his non-appearance as per the summons, the Court has now issued a warrant against the Thiruvananthapuram MP.
