For the first time since Independence, a party other than Congress had a very comfortable majority of 303 in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Modi’s government 2.0 is all set to take a fresh charge in the parliament with some new and old MPs. The newly elected 17th Lok Sabha showcase 353 NDA, 90 UPA, MGB15, and others 84.
Above all, a survey done by Association of Democratic Reforms said A total of 475 members of the new Lok Sabha are ‘crorepatis’. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath’s son Nakul Nath tops the list, the Association of Democratic Reforms said Sunday.
The ADR’s Survey
The ADR disclosed the figure of ‘crorepati’ MPs after inspecting the affidavits on assets and liabilities of 539 new MPs. Out of the 301 new BJP MPs, whose affidavits were examined, 265 (88 percent) were found crorepati, while all 18 winners of its NDA partner Shiv Sena had assets exceeding Rs one crore.
In Congress, 43 out of its 51 MPs (totaling 96 percent) were found to be ‘millionaires’. Similarly, 22 (96 percent) out of 23 DMK MPs, 20 (91 percent) out of 22 of the Trinamool Congress MPs and 19 (86 percent) out of 22 YSR Congress MPs had assets Rs one crore.
Interestingly, the top three ‘crorepati’ MPs are from the Congress party, the ADR said.

More than 50% have Criminal records
On another note, the 17th Lok Sabha will have close to half of its new MPs with declared criminal cases. Out of the 539 winners analyzed in Lok Sabha 2019, 233 MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. This is an increase of 44 percent in the number of MPs with declared criminal cases since 2009.
The figure is far more alarming when it comes to serious criminal cases. Around 159 (29 percent) winners this time have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women, etc. As per the self-sworn affidavits submitted by the candidates at the time of filing nominations, the new Lok Sabha has surpassed the previous two in electing MPs with criminal records.
