Bengaluru was drenched with moderate rains as strong winds lashed the city in the evening hours of Saturday until the wee hours of Sunday. The city also witnessed a few incidences of a hailstorm, minor waterlogging, uprooting of multiple trees, interruption in power supply and even damage to property. So almost for 24 hours, the city received a first-hand experience of how climate changes when the pre-monsoon rains announce the arrival of the monsoon.
Areas that were affected due to the uprooting of the trees include Indiranagar, Vijayanagar, Kadugodi, Jayanagar, Kalyan Nager, and Basavangudi. Apart from Bengaluru urban and rural, south interior districts of Karnataka like Chikmagalur, Mysuru, Davangere, Ballari, and Hassan were also affected. Unfortunately, the loss of one life was reported.
Rain To Continue In Bengaluru & Neighboring Districts
Predictions by Weatherman says that Bengaluru and its other neighboring districts close to Cauvery basin area will continue to receive rain in the upcoming week before the onset of south-west monsoon. The areas will have a partly cloudy sky and a few spells of rain and thundershowers, says the Indian Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures will be in the range between 33 and 21 degrees Celsius in Bengaluru with the Coastal Karnataka also experiencing thundershowers or rain. However, the bad news is that the north interior Karnataka will continue to remain dry.
The Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Center Meteorologist, Sunil M Gavaskar said, “We are expecting some showers over some parts of the state over the coming week due to a cyclonic circulation over the region. The rains will be mainly in south interior Karnataka, coastal and Malnad regions. There will be hardly any rainfall in north Karnataka.”
The IMD report says that Bengaluru got 27 mm rain on Saturday and 37.4 mm rain on Sunday.

Karnataka On Brinks Of Another Drought
In the last couple of weeks, the South-interior of Karnataka and Bangalore has been receiving moderate showers with some areas also receiving heavy rainfalls. The latest data indicates that the Bengaluru Urban faced a deficit in rainfall of 3% while Bengaluru Rural registered excess rainfall of 65% during the pre-monsoon period.
Gavaskar said, “Other than a few districts including Bengaluru, overall for the state the pre-monsoon rainfall has also been deficient.”
As per the earlier report of below-par monsoon, Karnataka is on the brink of yet another drought this year. Gavaskar explained, “The onset of monsoon is expected to take place on June 6 ( +/- 4 days) by the IMD (Indian Meteorological Department). It will take another two days to reach in Karnataka after it onsets in Kerala. This year for the whole country we are expecting near normal to below normal but we will get a regional-wise forecast in the first week of June. Then we will get to know a little better.”
