LS Elections 2019 Key Winners & Losers: Rahul Gandhi’s Loss And Sumalatha’s Win Drove Attention

lok sabha elections 2019

The biggest win of this Lok Sabha Elections 2019 was of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah duo. Narendra Modi represented the face of new change, growth and economic progress and attracted voters with his dynamism.

On the other end, Amit Shah made it sure that the message and reach of his party touched every voter through his clever strategy. Both Modi and Shah won with a huge margin from their constituencies Varanasi and Gandhinagar respectively.

But the biggest surprise was the defeat of the scion of Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi from Amethi which has been the bastion of the family since generations. Union Minister, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi creating a sort of record. However, the president of the Congress still managed to retain his honor by winning from Wayanad, Kerala with a substantial margin.

Sonia Gandhi retained her seat from Rae Bareli very easily.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Major Losers & New Entrants

It was a dismal performance by the Congress who even struggled to meet the required number of seats necessary to sit in the Parliament as an opposition party. Contrarily, BJP managed to gain 300+ seats on its own making it the single largest party for the second time in succession.

It also means that Narendra Modi will be the third prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi to retain his post with a majority government.

Celebrities who lost include Shatrughan Sinha, Jayaprada Nahata, Raj Babbar, and first-time entrants  Prakash Raj and Urmila Matondkar whereas first-time entrant Sunny Deol won the election from Gurdaspur constituency.  He defeated Sunil Jakhar by 82459 Votes.

Another shock was the loss of Jyotiraditya Scindia of Congress who was also in the run for the post of CM in Madhya Pradesh after his party won the state elections in December 2018. He lost to BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh in Guna. BJP candidate and Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari won the seat in North East Delhi against Congress veteran Sheila Dixit.

Most of the BJP ministers and leaders including home minister Rajnath Singh, transport minister, Nitin Gadkari won in their respective constituencies very easily.  The only shockers for the ruling party were Hardeep Singh Puri who lost from Amritsar and Manoj Sinha from Ghazipur. Both are council ministers.

Big guns from the Government including finance minister Arun Jaitley and the external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj did not participate in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Swaraj decided to opt out of elections citing health reasons whereas Jaitley lost the general elections in 2014 and was inducted in the Parliament via Rajya Sabha.

Big names among non-national parties that also lost include the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti of the  People’s Democratic Party from Anantnag and former Union Minister Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
