Kuduremukha literally means ‘horse face’ which comes in reference to a particular view that resembles a horse’s face. It is also called as ‘samseparvatha’, as historically, it had an access from samse village. This hill station cum mining town is at a distance of 48 km from Karkala and 20 km from Kalasa.

It is regarded as the second highest peak of Karnataka after Mullayanagiri. It receives an average annual rainfall of 7000 mm, mostly due to the forest cover and a rich vegetation around.

It is the largest reserve for the tropical green wet forest, popularly known as Kuduremukha National Park. It comes under the Global Tiger conservation priority which is spread over the thick hilly forests on the uplands of Western Ghats.

The national park is an amazing space which is spread across 600 sq meters of area. It is declared as a protected forest area in 1987 which is today a home for species of a different kind. Here, one can spot Sambhar, Giant Flying Squirrels, Wild dogs along with Tigers, and Leopards. It is said that the Hill station has over 170 species of birds; Malabar Whistling Thrush, Imperial Pigeon, Trogon, and so on.

There is a place near Kuduremukh hill station, known as Gangamoola. It is said to be a place of origin of three rivers; Bhadra, Tunga, and Nethravathi. One of the popular attractions here is the cave that houses Lord Varaha and Goddess Bhagavathi. Ganagmoola can be reached by trekking for about 2 km, crossing lanes between Kuduremukha and Sringeri.

At about 15 km from Kuduremukha, there is a waterfall situated between the hilly regions of Lakya Dam and Karkala. It is called as Hanuman Gundi falls or Sutanabbe falls which falls from a height of 100 feet. Hanuman Gundi is kind of a must-visit place in Kuduremukh as it offers an ebullient view. Climb a flight of 3000 steps to witness this waterfall.

An off-beat spot but equally popular among the travelers, Rock Cut Garden is another must-visit place near Kuduremukha. It offers a view of flowers of different variety and a mountain range surrounding near the Bhadra Reservoir.

Kuduremukha can be felt and experienced only through trekking. This mountain range with full-fledged landscapes and steeps around, adventures is just at your feet. Being the second highest peak in Karnataka, Kuduremukha offers an exciting experience and the feel is just beyond words.
Here, the difficulty level varies. The trek is nearly 20 km long which takes you through coffee farms, water streams, green forests before you reach to the top of the peak. View from Kuduremukha’s top is incredibly beautiful with picturesque landscapes and Arabian sea; life seems to be blessed. (One can trek here from 6 AM – 5 PM).

At 29 km from Kuduremukha, there lies Hornadu, a holy place dedicated to Shri Annaporneshwari Devi. A must-visit place; the way from Kuduremukha to Horanadu, especially during Monsoons is way too exciting.

The nearby attractions are Karkala; a place where you can see Kere Basadi and Gommateshwara statue. In this belt, you can also cover Udupi and Mangaluru based on your time and comfort.
