10 Things You Need To Know About Basavaraj Bommai, Karnataka’s New Chief Minister

After much suspense, the word is out on the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj Bommai, who was part of the BJP cabinet as the Home Minister, will be the new CM of Karnataka. BS Yediyurappa had resigned from the post on 26th July after completing two years as the CM.

1) Son of SR Bommai, former Karnataka CM

Born in Hubli, Basavaraj Bommai is the son of SR Bommai, who had previously served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Hence, after the HD Devegowda and HD Kumaraswamy father-son duo, the Bommai’s will be the next father-son CM duo in Karnataka politics.

2) MLA from Shiggaon

Having initially been a member of the Legislative Council, in 2008, Basavaraj Bommai won the MLA elections from Shiggaon. Since then he has been the MLA from the constituency.

3) Belongs to Lingayat Community

Basavaraj Bommai belongs to the Lingayat community, the same community to which BS Yediyurappa belongs to.

4) Has held responsible posts before

In the recently dissolved Yediyurappa Council, Basavaraj Bommai was Minister of State for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka.

Having graduated from the  B V Bhoomaraddi College Of Engineering & Technology, Karnataka’s new Chief Minister is a Mechanical Engineer.

6) He has worked with the Tata Group

Basavaraj Bommai’s professional career started as an engineer. He was associated with the Tata Group as a mechanical engineer.

7) A close aide of BS Yediyurappa

Basavaraj Bommai is said to be a close aide of former CM BS Yediyurappa. This is said to have been one of the main reasons behind his appointment to the post.

Basavaraj Bommai was not part of the BJP at the start of his political career. He was a member of the Janata Dal party. He left Janata Dal and later joined BJP.

Bommai is knowledgeable about the irrigation matters of the state. He implemented India’s first 100% piped irrigation project at Shiggaon in the Haveri district of Karnataka.
