In August 2019, the former President Rahul Gandhi stepped down from the position after suffering a stunning defeat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019. Sonia Gandhi stepped in to fill the vacuum as the interim President of the party but has continued for over a year. The Congress Working Committee has failed to elect a President. Many inside the party including Shashi Tharoor has called for an election to elect a non-Gandhi president. However, the working committee is yet to make a decision.

Workers Want Rahul Gandhi

Many inside the party has also appealed to Rahul Gandhi to return as the President of the party while the leader has consistently denied a comeback. The current announcement of the Congress Working Committee meet comes after Sonia Gandhi completed one year as the interim chief of the party and continued henceforth. Some say that the uncertainty in the party has left the workers on a cliff.

In a recent media briefing by the Congress party, it reiterated that many of its workers across the country want Rahul Gandhi to return as the in-charge of the party.
