As the nationwide lockdown comes to an end, there are rumors of it continuing in the hotspots of the outbreak. India has a total of 284 districts that have at least one case of COVID-19 which is a steep rise from the number two weeks ago – 84.
On March 23rd, the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the nationwide lockdown, there was at least one case of the novel coronavirus in the 84 districts of the country. 15 days later, despite the lockdown, the number has gone up steeply with 200 more districts reported at least one case of the coronavirus.
Major Hotspots in the country
Apart from the new addition of 200 districts, the already hit districts also saw a surge in the number of cases in the lockdown period. These have eventually turned out to be the major hotspots of the country. South Delhi saw the highest increase in the new cases with 316 in the last two weeks. Mumbai and Kasargod are at second and third place with an increase of 278 and 121 new cases respectively. Similarly, Indore had 110 new cases, Hyderabad with 95, Chennai with 79, Yadadri with 52, Ahmedabad 50, Kannur 48, GB Nagar 47, Jaipur 46, Bengaluru 44, Dindihul 43, Pune and Agra with 36 each, Nellore 31, Erode 30 and Guntur 30.
These are, as of now, assumed to be the top hotspots of the country where the next phase of containment is likely to be implemented soon.
Karnataka’s strike rate best among the Southern States
A Twitter user, James Wilson, with his consolidated data of testing comparison between the southern states and Maharashtra, has pointed out that Karnataka has the least strike rate i.e. the number of cases that have turned out to be positive out of all the samples. Karnataka has so far conducted 6654 tests out of which 181 have turned out to be positive with the strike rate of 2.72. Karnataka has carried out 100 tests per million population, a little more than the national average of 95.
The analysis also mentions that Maharashtra has carried out more number of tests than all the southern states combined with 25753 tests. Out of the southern states, Kerala has carried out more tests at 11252 and also has more number of tests per million with 319. Tamil Nadu has the worst strike rate of 13.11 with less number of tests.
